Overpopulation
There are already so many dogs looking for homes, and thousands of perfectly adoptable dogs, including puppies. They are killed in pounds and shelters across the country because there is not enough room for all of them. Spaying and neutering your pet is the best way to ensure there are not unwanted puppies living in shelters and pounds. Spaying or neutering your dog also ensures he or she will live a long, healthy life. So don't breed: Adopt!
If you breed your dog just once and the resulting puppies are bred, and their puppies are bred, and so on, within 6 years you will be responsible for up a staggering 67,000 dogs! Just because you bred from your dog once!
Why neuter/spay? Spaying completely eliminates the possibility of uterine or ovarian cancer and greatly reduces the incidence of breast cancer, particularly when your pet is spayed before her first estrous cycle. Neutering completely eliminates testicular cancer and decreases the incidence of prostate disease. Often, the vicious tendencies found in some dog breeds can be attributed to irresponsible breeding without regard for temperament. Neutering can help reduce this aggressive behavior. It can stop females having phantom pregnancies, mood swings and bleeding. It can stop males spraying, humping and being frustrated. Breeding from your female dog just once increases her chances of ovarian cancer by 7 times. On average a neutered dog lives 2 years longer than an un-neutered dog. Millions of dollars of your taxes are spent on dealing with the problem of unwanted animals. Irresponsible breeding contributes to the problem of dog bites and attacks. Stray animals get into garbage bins, defecate in public areas or on private lawns, and frighten or anger people who have no understanding of their misery or needs. Too many companion animals competing for too few good homes is the most obvious consequence of uncontrolled breeding.
However, there are other equally tragic problems that result from pet overpopulation: the transformation of some animal shelters into "warehouses," the acceptance of cruelty to animals as a way of life in our society, and the stress that caring shelter workers suffer when they are forced to euthanize one animal after another. Living creatures have become throwaway items to be cuddled when cute and abandoned when inconvenient. Such disregard for animal life pervades and erodes our culture.
Unfortunately most of the public is unaware of the great impact breeding and not spaying/neutering their dogs has. It is the power of knowledge and knowing that ignorance is NOT bliss that begins to save lives. Please don't place the blame of overpopulation and shelter euthanasia on shelter staff. It is a community caused problem, and takes a whole community to solve:
